Our vision and mission
- Our vision is of thriving economies and communities liberated from the restrictions of fossil fuels, using renewable energy as their mainstream source of power.
- The world is experiencing a once off historical transition.
- It's the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable fuels.
- Through the passion and imagination of our people, we work together with partners and communities to deliver a successful business that accelerates global progress towards a sustainable future.
|
Why South Africa
- Increasing demand for power.
- Long-term power generation shortfalls.
- Very positive signals from government to facilitate IPPs and promote clean and diverse forms of power generation.
- Significant scale - 10+GWs of potential.

About Genesis Eco - Energy
Genesis works with local communities and land owners to develop projects based on the needs in the local areas.
- Jeffrey's Bay wind farm and pumped storage project - 15 MW wind project that will be scaled up to 30MW in second phase; working with local farmer and DBSA; will provide greater grid stability in the area and much needed additional power.
- St Helena Bay wind farm - working with local community and land owners to confirm project potential and develop a 40MW wind farm that will benefit local community.
- Maasrust Trust - 50 MW wind farm, working together with local community trust; project will deliver strong benefits to new land owners.
- South Cape wind farm - working with local land conservancy organisation to build a 65MW wind farm; maximise the potential in the area and provide long term source of funds for local economic development.

Overview of our €850 million investment plan
- Delivering 500MW by 2014.
- Build Pipeline: Identify, secure and develop 30+ high potential sites predominantly in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape with a view to building 10-15 projects.
- Financing of Projects: through a mixture of project debt sourced from local banks and Mainstream's equity.
- Local Communities and Landowners: building long term partnerships with local communities and landowners ensuring that they remain involved in all stages of the project and benefit throughout.

Why wind energy for South Africa
- Security of supply.
- Energy independence.
- The base power is free. And the total costs are fixed.
- Replaces the most expensive until of electricity.
- Mitigates fossil price fluctuation.
- It's clean. No carbon fines.

Employment
Investing in People:
Number of jobs created assuming based on a 50MW project.
- Development stage: 5
- Construction Stage: 35
- Operations and Maintenance: 3-5 Full Time.
Manufacturing Industry:
- Assuming appropriate renewable targets, tariffs and regulatory framework are implemented it is envisaged that 58+ % of plant components can be manufactured locally.
- Local turbine manufacturing typically results in 3 jobs per MW with an additional 5 jobs per MW coming from supply chain activities.

Delivering benefits to local partners
Wind farm developments provide benefits in support of other economic development activities in the area.
- Providing additional income to farming communities - income from rentals provide many of the emerging farmers with welcome additional revenue streams.
- Effective structuring - by working with local partners to determine their needs, projects are structured in a way that allows them to access the cash flows in various ways based on these needs.
- Enterprise Development support - genesis skills in LED, land reform and enterprise development can be of significant benefit in assisting emerging farmers to develop a range of opportunities and fully realise the value of their land.
- Securing buffer zones - areas where there is a concern around the potential for unwanted or inappropriate development can be secured by using wind farms to create a buffer zone.

Hidden Benefits to Farming Communities - Energy, water and food
- Average SA commercial/domestic consumption - 3,5 MWh per annum (11 MWh p.a. in the USA!), = a minimum of 7,000 litres of water pa/per household just to keep the lights on.
- Alternatively, every 1,000 MWs of wind energy installed (approx. 2,628 GWh p.a.) saves at least 2.6 Billion litres of water each year.
- To put this in context: 1 kg of Maize needs approx 900 litres of water (www.waterfootprint.org), meaning that the water saved by having 1,000 MWs of wind installed will allow for an extra 2.89 Million tonnes (2.6 Billion / 900) of Maize each year.
- Maize is trading at approx. R1752.00/tonne thus it could be estimated that this extra water allows for an additional R5bn of maize revenues annually in the local economy.
